Addiction Treatment

Addiction treatment and recovery can be a very personal and sensitive process that needs to be handled with care and respect. Recently, there has been more access to research and information regarding addiction, giving people who are considering entering into an addiction treatment program more options that can meet their individual needs. Trends for more holistic treatment programs that address all aspects of an individual’s well-being, including their mind, body, and spirit, are proving very beneficial when treating addiction.

Addiction

Addiction is a complex treatable brain disorder that impacts millions of people and their loved ones around the world. Addiction does not discriminate and can affect people of all races, sexes, education levels, and social levels. Addiction is characterized by engaging in compulsive behaviors of seeking and participating in gratifying stimuli regardless of the dangerous or unfavorable consequences.

Treatment

There are a variety of traditional and alternative treatment options for treating addiction. Choosing the most effective therapy or combination of therapies depends on the individual seeking treatment. Various factors that can affect treatment options include what the individual is addicted to, how severe the addiction is, and if there are co-occurring addictions or co-morbid medical conditions, and the individual’s beliefs, values, and support system.

There are two main types of addiction treatment, inpatient rehabilitation programs, and outpatient rehabilitation programs. Within these two structures, there is a wide variety of therapies and treatments offered. Some of these options can include:

• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

• Dialectical Therapy

• Motivational Interviewing

• Medication-Assisted Treatment

• Counseling

• Holistic Treatments

• Yoga and Mindfulness

• 12-Step Programs

• Group Meetings and Support Groups

• Animal-Assisted Therapy

• Meditation

• Acupuncture

• Other Supportive Services as Needed

Addiction treatment and recovery are more likely to be successful when there is access to multiple treatment options and recovery programs that offer pathways that align with the client’s goals and values. New reports and legal findings are proving that it is not ethical or effective to force patients into treatment programs such as 12-step programs, options and variety must be offered.

Take Away

There is a lot of stigma and unfair beliefs about addiction that can impede or affect an individual’s treatment and recovery, therefore making it important to learn about and advocate for those affected by addiction. Finding the best treatment program that meets the individual’s needs can be found with research and opportunity, treatment will also transition and change through the recovery process.
